Adjacent are the gates of Hades
Tenuous wisps waft closer
Contaminating me with their corruption
And leaving me irrevocably tainted
I arrived alone and innocent
But now I have acquired companions
Anguish and Guilt eagerly embrace me
On my disastrous journey
They encourage me with deft support
Relishing my reluctant gait
Though knowing that this battle
Was won by them long ago
To my fate I shuffle amicably
Powerless to attempt dissent
Do not judge me for my weakness
And I'll not expose yours
I was thinking of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and for some reason got the Anguish and Guilt part. Why was I thinking of them? I think I was watching that Johnny Depp movie – is it called "The Ninth Gate"? Then came the idea of standing at the precipice of something awful and being judged for it. The poem was born.
